Whether you’ve brought your bike down to Surrey for a summer adventure or are simply looking for a daytime activity to pursue, Richmond Hill Hotel is conveniently located in the next to London’s largest area of greenery, Richmond’s Royal park, and just short ride away from the Thames river giving visitors access to many cycling routes suitable for the novice peddlers or any keen cyclist.
Here’s a round up of our favourite cycling routes throughout Richmond and beyond…
Route 1 - Circular route around the park
Best for a relaxed cycle
Head straight to the Royal Richmond park for a smooth and easy ride. This heritage park is Richmond’s real gem, and is just a few steps away from the hotel. There are several circular cycling routes to choose from - starting from a simple one hour route from Richmond Gate (closest to the hotel) to Roehampton Gate and back, to a full tour of the perimeter of the park.
The Royal park draws sightseers throughout the year, and is a lovely area to take a picnic or watch deer roam throughout the grassy enclosure.
Route 2 - Richmond riverside route
Best for sightseers
Ride your bike from the hotel straight to the riverside for a flat route which will take you along the Thames via the Richmond bankside to a historical destination point, Hampton Court. The ride is a 40 minute cycle each way, leaving explorers plenty of time to enjoy the grounds of the old Tudor palace.
To begin your journey, head right at the hotel and journey downhill through Richmond Terrace, where your cycling path will wind along a bend next to the Thames before heading along the leafy border of the National Trust’s Ham House. Carry on along the river route until you reach Kingston Bridge, which you’ll then cross to reach Hampton Cross road leading you directly to the palace.
Route 3 - Quick ride to Kew
Best for filling an afternoon
Looking for an afternoon activity? Pack up one of our afternoon teas to-go, and head towards the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. A quick 15 minute cycle ride away from the hotel, simply head north on Queens road which runs along Richmond park all the way to Kew. If you’re hoping to visit the gardens, they are now taking pre-booked slots for visits inside the grounds.
If you’re bringing your own bicycle, our concierge team can help you store your bike securely as you enjoy the rest of your stay. If you are planning to rent a bike for the day, we recommend the town’s park cycle hire scheme, located in Richmond Park.
