The countdown to Christmas has fully begun, and this year it looks like there's more fun to be had in Richmond and Surrey than ever before. A great alternative to the busy Christmas activities in central London, there's a whole host of events in the quaint area of Richmond-upon-Thames which you can explore at your own pace and leisure.
Whether you're a Richmond local, or travelling from afar on a romantic winter break or family holiday, here's our round up of 2019 Christmas events we hope you'll enjoy this festive season...
Friday 6th December
Christmas kicks off in Richmond properly with the town's decorative light switch on the 21st November 2019. But come Christmas, why not explore the neighbouring town of Barnes for a mini-Christmas festival to put you in merry spirits. Expect carol singing, pop-up food stalls and a winter market stacked with arts, crafts and edible treats which will make for perfect presents to give to family or friends.
Saturday 7th - Saturday 14th December
There's nothing that feels more festive than a trip to the theatre. And, this December in Twickenham, there's the chance to watch Richmond Shakespeare Society perform their take on A Christmas Carol this year at Mary Wallace Theatre.
Thursday 12th December
Join professional florist Emma Hawkins in Elleray Hall, Teddington, to make your very own Christmas wreath over a glass of mulled wine and a homemade mince pie. Starting with a wire ring and moss, you’ll add lots of foliage, berries and an abundance of natural decorations, leaving you with a beautiful handmade wreath to take home - just in time for Christmas!
Sunday 15th December
Costume enthusiasts staying in Richmond will love this novelty 5k run through Richmond Park! Everyone of any age and ability is encouraged to take part in this annual fun run where participants dress themselves - and even their dogs - as Santa Claus. The event is in support of local charity, Princess Alice Hospice, where all registration fees and donations will go to providing the best care and support for families experiencing terminal illness.
16th, 18th, 19th, 22nd and 23rd December
Just a 30 minute drive from Richmond Hill Hotel is the historic Hampton Court Palace and gardens, famed for being the former home of Tudor King Henry VIII. In addition to stunning festive outdoor and indoor decorations designed by our very own local florist, Jacky MacGregor from Mac Creatives, the palace also has a series of fun musical evenings to take part in.
There will be two Christmas carol singing sessions per evening on selected dates from 16th December in the palace's courtyard. Everyone visiting is encouraged to take part and classic carols will be accompanied by music performed by Epsom & Ewell Silver Band.
What could be a more romantic way of enjoying Christmas in Richmond than upon a horse-drawn carriage! This December take a 60-minute magical ride from Holly Lodge through Richmond Park, and cosy up with your partner or friends and family in a four-person Landau carriage as you enjoy frosty views of the park.
Wednesday 20th November 2019 – Sunday 5th January 2020
Kew Gardens is set to dazzle with its seventh year of evening light exhibitions. And, for 2019, guests can expect a brand new new trail of glittering spiral trees and dynamic laser projections leading to the iconic and illuminated Temperate House. Booking in advance is recommended as this is always an extremely popular exhibit.
