Richmond-upon-Thames is a haven for innovative local businesses and corporate groups escaping the hustle and bustle of the city, offering a rich outdoor environment for team building activities.
With brighter days and warmer climes on the horizon our Director of Sales at Richmond Hill Hotel, Gill Bonham, shares her favourite spots to explore with corporate groups during spring and summer months as part of her 'Time Well Spent' top tips series for event professionals.
Passionate about skiing and running, Gill has been part of the Richmond community for the last decade since joining the hotel team in 2010, and regularly shares her passions for getting outdoors and staying active with clients visiting the leafy borough of Greater London. Gill said:
“We’re incredibly lucky to work just minutes away from the central business hub of our capital city and its international airports, but one of my favourite things about working in Richmond is the opportunity the location affords for teams to take time out of the office. There are so many ways to incorporate getting active on a business day away, and fitting some exercise into your schedule to help keep your team focused and energised…”
Hit the refresh button on meetings with a running or walking tour
“Many of the hotel’s meeting rooms are flooded with natural daylight from the original Georgian sash windows. But to get the real effects of Vitamin D, I often invite groups out for a ‘Wake Up and Walk’ tour of Richmond’s Royal Park before starting the day’s meetings.
It’s a great way to familiarise the group with the park’s history, and everyone always comes back refreshed and focused for the day. And, if the team lulls towards the middle of the day after a few meeting sessions, there’s always the opportunity to take an extended lunch break for a team jog along the Tamsin Trail which circulates the park’s perimeter.”
Ramp up your team’s competitive spirit with rowing
“When the weather’s fair, it’s almost a crime not to take advantage of the nearby River Thames. The local boat hire facilities can be rented by the hour, and groups can either choose to row at a leisurely pace to take in the sites or race from bridge-to-bridge to add some competition between team members.”
Paddleboard with a purpose
“Richmond Hill Hotel is proud to be part of the local ‘Be Richmond’ BID initiative to make the borough a greener place to live, work and play. Every year we take part in the town’s annual river clean-up event by hopping on a paddleboard and using fishing nets to clear away any floating debris from the waterways of London. It’s a great team activity, which can be arranged for any time of the year and it's a popular choice for teams looking to bond together over a feel-good CSR activity to achieve a common goal.”
Picnics on Petersham meadow
“Less sporty groups can also reap the benefits of green and leafy Richmond at a more leisurely pace. Whether you’re looking to break up your day of training, or want to take a brainstorming session outdoors, we're conveniently located just a few steps away from the wild-flower clad Petersham Meadows - the perfect spot to take a picnic this spring.”
